A STORY OF REMARKABLE SUCCESS
The history of Peugeot is not simply the story of a range of motor cars. However, it was the motor car that made Peugeot famous and enabled it to carve out an international reputation for itself in all these areas. This extraordinary industrial growth was due to Armand Peugeot, who was the first to have faith in the motor car, introducing a steam-driven three-wheel vehicle at the 1889 World Fair. He later quickly saw the possibilities offered by the oil engine and, once they were convinced of its success, the family got right behind him, in the process turning Peugeot into one of the most powerful industrial empires of Europe and, indeed, the world over the following years.

This story follows the changes and successes, trials and tribulations, innovations and choices which, coupled with its capacity to reinvent itself and change direction, are what enabled Peugeot to become an industrial group which has become increasingly powerful over the decades.

1890 - 1895 FROM STEAM TO PETROL
Armand Peugeot, anticipating the motor car boom, exp
1890 Armand Peugeot quickly abandons steam for petrol and produces the first Peugeot petrol-powered four-wheel car, the Type 2, fitted with a Daimler engine, at the Valentigney factory.

1891 The Peugeot company name is changed to Les fils de Peugeot frères. In September, a petrol-powered four-wheel car, driven by Messrs. Rigoulet and Doriot, travels from Valentigney to Brest and back again - a round trip of 1375 miles - at an average speed of almost 9 mph.

1892 Peugeot produces 29 cars and is the first company to fit rubber tyres to a petrol-engined four-wheel car. Peugeot's Type 4 is a unique model, ordered by the Bey of Tunis.

1894 Armand Peugeot diversifies his range and, practically simultaneously, brings out the Type 5 (a two-seater), the Type 6 and 7 phaetons, the Type 8 Victoria, the Type 9 Vis-a-vis and the Type 10 estate. A Paris - Rouen "Horseless Carriage Race" sees Peugeot and Panhard share the first prize.

1895 The range is extended by the addition of the Type 11 (a two-seater) and the Type 12 (a closed estate). During the Paris-Bordeaux-Paris race, Édouard Michelin tries out the first pneumatic tyres on the Éclair. The first prize is won by Koechelin in a Peugeot. Production of the first ball bearings bearing the Lion trade mark. Introduction of the first Peugeot commercial vehicle, the Type 13, a delivery van which will only be produced for two years.

1896 - 1901THE EMANSIPATION OF ARMAND

1896 - 1901THE EMANSIPATION OF ARMAND
Armand Peugeot sets up his own company, leaving the traditional industries to the rest of the family

1896 Establishment of Société des auto-mobiles Peugeot in Lille by Armand Peugeot. It is to be devoted to the manufacture of touring cars and trucks while the sons of his cousin Eugène, Pierre (1871 -1927), Robert (1873 - 1945) and Jules (1882- 1959) as "les Fils de Peugeot frères" turn their energies to tools, bicycles and motorbikes. The car remained the domain of Armand who had no male heirs. The Type 14 appears in the summer. It is the first model to have a Peugeot 2 cylinder horizontal engine (patented by Michaux). The Daimler engines that Armand Peugeot used to buy from Panhard and Levassor, the French importers of the engine, will not be used from the following year on.
1897 Armand builds a motor car factory (with a total floor area of 50,000 sq.meters, 4,000 of them covered) at Audincourt in the Doubs region and another one at Fives-Lille in the north of the country, the first Peugeot site outside Franche-Comté. From now on, Armand Peugeot will manufacture his own 2-cylinder horizontal engine and he updates practically his whole product range with the Type 14 (a two-seater),Type 15 (a phaeton), Type 16 (a Vis-à-vis), Type 17 (a very small car requiring no licence) and Type 18 (an 8-seater estate), all fitted with Peugeot engines. From this date on, Peugeot cars are available with optional Michelin tyres with tubes, instead of the old solid tyres.

1898 The catalogue continues to grow, with Types 21 to 25 supplementing the earlier Types 14 to 20. In July, Peugeot takes part in the First Paris Motor Show.

1899 The Peugeot catalogue now covers fifteen models, ranging from 2 to 12 seaters and weighing between 720 and 1250 kg. The most popular model is the Type 15 phaeton. Three-wheelers are built in the Beaulieu factory. Peugeot makes its first Capitaine Gérard folding bicycle, a model that forms part of every soldier's kit in World War One.

1900 Peugeot's car output reaches 500 units per year. But it also produces 20,000 bicycles, 100 tonnes of boning for corsets and 6 tonnes of springs for pincenez.

1901 The Type 36, available as a 3-seater spider convertible or a 4-seater tonneau has a new single-cylinder vertical engine. It's the first Peugeot to have a bonnet at the front and, in place of the handlebars, it has a steering wheel (with an inclined steering column). It also marks the move to chainless transmission systems. Appearance of the first Peugeot 1.5 h.p. motorbike. December: the first 4-cylinder Peugeot cars are shown at the Paris Show.

1902 - 1909 FROM TWO WHEELS TO FOUR

1902 - 1909 FROM TWO WHEELS TO FOUR
Peugeots leave their horse-drawn heritage behind, developing into true cars with bonnets and steering wheels.

1902 The Peugeot range is totally updated, along the lines of the Type 36 model introduced the previous year and boasting a bonnet and steering wheel. The old models listed in the catalogue are only there to run down stocks. The Peugeot motor cars head office is set up in Levallois. Audincourt has a staff of 800 workers, while Fives-Lille has 600. A Peugeot truck is awarded a national prize, while a 20 hp Peugeot makes it to the top of La Turbie (Alpes-Maritime) at a speed of 25 mph.

1903 Armand Peugeot slims down his range of cars. The catalogue now consists of 6 Types: the 42, 43, 44, 50, 54 and 56. The first three of these have 4-cylinder engines, the 50 has a 2-cylinder engine while the last two have single-cylinder engines. Introduction of the first Peugeot 5 hp motorcycle.

1904 From this year onwards, Armand updates his range every year and this trend continues almost up to the time of World War One. In December comes the introduction of the Peugeot Baby (Type 69), the first to bear this name: it has a vertical single cylinder engine and is unveiled at the Paris Show. Les fils de Peugeot frères develop their first motor car.
1905 The Peugeot factories produce 30 tonnes of phonograph springs per month! The first automobile produced by Les fils de Peugeot frères is a Lion-Peugeot with a single cylinder engine, unveiled at the Paris Show in December. It is followed later by a V-design two-cylinder version. While Armand directs his attention to ambitious cars, the Lion Peugeot models are more popular small cars. This means that the two companies are not in direct competition. Eugène attempts a rap-prochement with his cousin, Armand but in fact, it is only following Eugène's death in 1907, that his three sons will reach an agreement with their uncle in 1910 to merge the two companies.
1907 First light 1.75 hp motorbike engines appear. Development of the factory in Pont-de-Roide (Doubs). Establishment of Établissements Peugeot & Cie. In March, a Lion-badged Peugeot wins the cup in the small car competition, with Giuppone at the wheel.

1908 The combined output of Automobiles Peugeot and Les fils de Peugeot frères reaches 2220 units. The Lion Peugeot small cars carry off a number of important victories in competition, particularly the Targa Florio with Giuppone.

1909 The Lion Peugeot small cars, still driven by the Lion-badged Peugeot team Giuppone again take the prize in the small car category in the Targa Florio and also the cup for small cars organized by Auto magazine.

1910 -1918 UNITY BRINGS STRENGTH

1910 -1918 UNITY BRINGS STRENGTH
Les Fils de Peugeot frères, makers of the small Lion cars, finally merge with their Uncle Armand

1910 Automobiles Peugeot and Les fils de Peugeot frères merge to form Société anonyme des auto-mobiles et cycles Peugeot, with Robert Peugeot heading up the new operation. However, the two ranges will keep going in tandem until World War One.

1911 In November, Peugeot signs a cooperation agreement with Ettore Bugatti for the design of a popular car.

1912 At the ACF Grand Prix, held in Dieppe in June, Boillot wins in his Peugeot L76. This was the first car in the world to have an engine with four camshafts and four valves per cylinder. Construction begins at the Sochaux factory. In December, at the Paris Show, the Peugeot Baby (Type BP1) designed by Ettore Bugatti, the second car to bear this name, is introduced. It has nothing in common with the 1905 Baby. The new model is a 6 hp car and Peugeot will produce 3095 units in its Beaulieu factory by 1916.

1913 In May, Jules Goux wins the Indianapolis 500 in a Peugeot. This historic victory in the great American classic gives birth to a legend, the famous four cylinder Offenhauser engine, derived from the twin camshaft 4-cylinder engine fitted with four valves per cylinder fitted to the winning Peugeots. Its career in the 500 will last over 60 (sixty) years! The same Jules Goux beats the hourly speed record with an average speed of 106.598 mph. In July, Boillot wins the Amiens Grand Prix in a Peugeot L56. Output triples between 1911 and 1913. Peugeot produces 9338 units, representing 50% of French production and 20% of the French market.
1914 automobiles et cycles Peugeot employs 2500 workers and produces 10,000 cars and 80,000 bicycles per year in its factories in Audincourt, Beaulieu, Lille and Valentigney.

1915 Armand Peugeot, the founder of the automobile division, dies in August 1915.

1916 In May, a further Peugeot victory in the Indianapolis 500, this time with Dario Resta at the wheel of an L 45. Robert Peugeot buys additional land at Sochaux-Montbéliard.

1918 Construction of the ironworks in Sochaux.

1914-18 conflict, the Lille factory is occupied while the other factories participate in the war effort. They will supply 1000 motorcycles, 63,000 bicycles, 3,000 cars, 6,000 trucks, 1,400 tank engines, 10,000 airplane engines and 6 million bombs and shells. Bulletin des Usines, the first company newspaper in France is set up. Later, it will be renamed Le Courrier des usines, then on Vite et loin, followed by Peugeot Magazine in 1981 and finally Planète Groupe in 1998.

After World War One, the motor car becomes accessible to greater numbers of people, thanks to cars like the Quadrilette.

1919 Construction of an ironworks in Sochaux. Another victory for Peugeot in Indianapolis in May, with Wilcox as the driver. In July, introduction of the new Peugeot 10 hp model (Type 163). In December, the Quadrilette (Type 161) is unveiled. It's an economical cyclecar, building on the ideas developed in the pre-War Baby.

1920 First appearance of a Peugeot car with a valveless 6 cylinder engine - the 25 hp Type 156.

1921 Production of the Quadrilette and the Type 153 starts at Beaulieu.

1923 Brakes on all four wheels are available on all Peugeot cars, as standard or as an option. For the first time, Peugeot produces over 10,000 vehicles in a single year.
1925 André Boillot wins the Targa Florio in a valveless Peugeot. The 100,000th motor car leaves the Peugeot factories and 20,000 Peugeot vehicles are built in the course of the year.

Construction of a factory to make car bodies in Sochaux. In October, introduction of the Lumineuse car body on the 9 hp (Type 177 M) at the Paris Motor Show. It is a forerunner of the famous sunroof, a product in which Peugeot will be the undisputed specialists for a long time to come.

1927 Start of cold rolling of stainless steel at Pont-de-Roide (Doubs).

1928 Standardised production starts, concentrated on the Sochaux-Montbéliard site, at the instigation of Jean-Pierre Peugeot (1896 - 1966). 1929 - 1934 FROM THE ZERO TO THE ECLIPSE

1929 - 1934 FROM THE ZERO TO THE ECLIPSE
The 201 starts the system of using model names containing a central zero and Peugeot invents the folding roof

1929 The car which quickly becomes known simply as the 201 makes its appearance at the Paris Show in October under the name 6 hp Type 201. It is the first car to have an 0 in the middle of its name - a policy still followed today. Peugeot registers a trademark based on having 3 digits with a central zero. Following the 1931 Motor Show, the 201 is the first car in the world to have independent front wheels as standard. This feature coupled with its fuel economy ensures that it enjoys broad success, enabling Peugeot to survive the economic crisis relatively easily.

1930 Production of bicycles in Beaulieu reaches a peak of 162,000 units.
1932 Launch of the 301 and victory for the 201 in the Monte Carlo rally. This proves to be Peugeot's most difficult year. Like every other carmakers, it is affected by the financial crisis. Production drops from 43,000 units in 1930 to 33,000 in 1931 and down to 28,000 by 1932. However, the figure rises back up to 36,000 in 1933.

1933 At the Paris Motor Show in October, launch of an aerodynamic shape for the full Peugeot range. It features shell headlights, a slightly inclined radiator grill and low-swooping wings. The aerodynamic 301 appears at the same time, featuring a back with a profile like a dress with a flowing train. Launch of the first Peugeot electric tools.

1934 In May comes the introduction of the 601, a top of the range six cylinder model. Appearance of the first car to feature a folding roof. The car is the 401 and the model name is the Eclipse. This world first, created in collaboration with the designer Paulin, the Peugeot concessionaire Darl'Mat and the Pourtout body construction firm, results in the standardised production by Peugeot of one of the most original cars in production worldwide. This idea was picked up by Ford in the Fifties and Mercedes-Benz in the Nineties and then reinvented by Peugeot to suit modern tastes in 1998 with the 20 Coeur shown at the Geneva Show in 1999. In October, launch of the 401 at the Paris Show and adoption of the "beaver tail" type of body across the range. The 515, a 500 cc motorbike, breaks three world records.

1935 - 1945 AERODYNAMICS REIGN
In the wings since the Twenties, Aero dynamics goes centrestage with the Sochaux rocket range

1935 Introduction of the 402 at the Paris Show in October. It marks a turning-point in the history of the Peugeot brand, which is ahead of all its competitors in introducing an aerodynamic body as standard. This is the famous "Sochaux rocket" range, characterised by fluid lines and a shield-shaped grill to protect the headlights. In addition, a semi-automatic version of the 402 is also shown on the stand, featuring a Cotal electro-mechanical gearbox.

1936 Launch of the 302 that also has the Sochaux rocket shape. Launch of the 500, 350 and 175 cc motorbikes, along with the 100 cc moped. 1938 In February, Peugeot unveils the 202. Annual production reaches 50,000 units i.e. a quarter of the national output. Sochaux has a staff of 1300. In June, victory in the 1500 to 2000 cc class in the Le Mans 24-Hour race for the 402 Darl'Mat.

1935 - 1945 AERODYNAMICS REIGN #2
In the wings since the Twenties, Aero dynamics goes centrestage with the Sochaux rocket range

1940 The Sochaux factories are occupied by the Germans. Under them, 500 vans are produced there per month. The Peugeot factories, like the rest of industry throughout the occupied countries are placed under the direction of Ferdinand Porsche.

1941 Introduction of the VLV, an electric car, to meet the fuel restrictions imposed by the occupying forces. It is manufactured close to Paris.

1943 During the night of 15 to 16 July, the factories are bombarded by RAF Lancaster planes. 125 of the Sochaux population die and 250 are injured. Sabotage teams are put in place. A number of Resistance-supporting directors, managers and workers are deported to Germany.
1944 Liberation of the factories and town of Sochaux by the First Army under General de Lattre de Tassigny.

1945 The workshops have been destroyed, the factory has been looted and Sochaux now has only 9,400 workers. Restarting industrial operations proves difficult.

1946 Production restarts with the 202, the basic model in the Peugeot range. 14,000 units are produced in Sochaux in this year.

1947 Establishment of Sedis, a company specialising in the manufacture of transmission systems

1948 - 1959 THE GREAT RECOVERY

1948 - 1959 THE GREAT RECOVERY
In the middle of its reconstruction, Peugeot brings out a totally new monocoque saloon in 1948: the 203.

1948 At the Paris Motor Show in October, Peugeot unveils the 203, its first totally new postwar car, and adopts a unique model policy. The 203 has a rare feature for a standardised production car : 4 cylinders with hemispherical Alpax cylinder heads and V-inclined valve heads with spark plugs fitted in a central well. Structurally, this is the first time that Peugeot offers a monocoque shell.

1955 On 20 April, Peugeot unveils the 403. For the first time, Peugeot calls on the services of the Turin-based Italian designer, Pininfarina, to design one of its models. This is the start of a fruitful collaboration that still endures today. The 403 is the first Peugeot to have a convex wind-screen and the first model to reach the million mark. For the first time, Peugeot's annual output exceeds 100,000 units, reaching a figure of 112,223 vehicles. Cycles Peugeot has 3,500 workers and produces 220,000 bikes at the Beaulieu plant.

1956 The first computer appears at Sochaux -an IBM-650 designed to handle the stock. Crisis in the cycle industry. Turnover at Cycles Peugeot drops by 50%.

1958 In order to contain the crisis in the bicycle industry, Cycles Peugeot turns to the production of car components and becomes an equipment manufacturer.

1959 Peugeot launches its first standardised production diesel car, the 403 with an Indénor engine. Peugeot cars reach a major milestone, with two million cars built. The 403 is the first mass-produced car in the world to have an automatic fan which is controlled by engine temperature. This year sees the last lions in relief on the bonnet of the 203 and 403, as it is considered too dangerous for cyclists and pedestrians. Peugeot builds its first test circuit at Belchamp (a site including 400 hectares of forest), close to Sochaux.

1960 - 1964 THE 404 ERA: THE ITALIAN STAMP

1960 - 1964 THE 404 ERA: THE ITALIAN STAMP
The 404, designed in Italy, marks an important stylistic turning-point for the image and future of Peugeot.

1960 In May, introduction of the 404.Two million are produced between 1960 and 1972. Stylistically, the body of the Pininfarina-designed 404, a blend of classic modernism and good taste, represents a total revamp of the Peugeot image. Production of forged tools is transferred to subsidiaries: Forges de Lavieu in the Loire district and Forges de Goldenberg in Alsace.

1961 In March, Peugeot brings out the first French direct injection engine at the Geneva Motor Show and offers it as standard on the 404 six months later. Peugeot's annual output reaches 260,000 vehicles. Work starts on a factory on the 300 hectare site at Ile Napoléon near Mulhouse. Over time, this plant develops into the company's second production centre.

1962 Annual automobile output exceeds 200,000 units. Launch of the BB 104 moped with its streamlined body.
1963 Negotiations with Citroën result in a limited form of association. However, no further rapprochement ensues, so negotiations are initiated with Renault (Régie Nationale des Usines Renault). First Peugeot victory in the East African Safari for Noxicki and Cliff in a 404. In August, production of the 403 reaches the million mark. Introduction of a 404 with an automatic Jaeger gearbox.
